Beard Oil & Balm (27)

What’s the difference oil, balm, and wax?

The plethora of grooming products from beard balms to waxes on the market these days is enough to perplex any gentleman about what exactly is right for their style. The difference between these products lies in their components.

Beard oils are strictly oil-based and work much like a leave-in conditioner. Beard balms and waxes are comprised mostly of beeswax which is why they are great for styling.

Beard Oil: is great for thicker beards as it moisturizes both the cuticle of the hair and the skin underneath the beard. These products will decrease dandruff and itchiness associated with full beards, while conditioning and strengthening the hair to create a soft, healthy appearance. Key ingredient: Jojoba oil, Argan Oil, or Grapeseed oil (This can differ according to the blend, typically it is either one or more of these.) Beard Length/type: 3cm+, full beard that protrudes outward and/or downward with a 3-dimensional effect. Directions: Before you begin, make sure you start with a clean, dry beard that has been shampooed and conditioned with beard-specific products. Apply a dime-sized amount of beard oil to your palm and rub your hands together, thoroughly coating the sides and tips of your fingers. Finger comb the product through the hair from root to tips and into the skin.

Beard Balms: boost volume, moisturize skin and hair, add shine, and holds the wearers look in place. Beard balms contain less beeswax than beard wax, which creates a natural look that still looks styled and well-kept. These products are best suited to for small to medium beards, between 2 cm and 10 cm. Key ingredient: Beeswax Beard Length/type: small to medium length beards from 2 to 10 cm Directions: After cleaning and drying your beard, start by rubbing your hands together vigorously to warm them up. Once warm, remove a thumbnail-sized amount of product and rub it between your hands until it is in liquid form. Use your fingers (not just the palms!) to comb the beard balm through the hair from the roots to the ends then style. Fuller beards may need a bit of wax afterward to help hold the ‘do in place.

Beard Wax: contains a higher percentage of beeswax than other products, making it the best option for styling and locking your look in place. Waxes are excellent for men with full beards, goatees, or long mustaches, but users should always prep their beard with balm before applying wax. Key ingredient: beeswax. Beard Length/type: full beards of medium or long length, mustaches, and thick goatees 5 cm or longer. Directions: After applying your beard oil and balms, rub a thumbnail-sized dot of wax and between the palms of your hands until completely melted then continue rubbing to distribute evenly over your fingers. Run your fingers through your beard starting at the base of the hair to the ends until evenly coated.

For thick bushy look: After application, brush the beard with a boar hair bristle brush first in an upward and outward motion to add volume and then back down into place with a boar hair bristle brush. Do NOT comb. Blow dry upwards on the cool setting and then go over once more with the brush to shape stray hairs

For a kept look: After application, use your fingers to rake into the general shape you prefer, then use fluid strokes of a beard-safe fine-tooth comb to finesse and sculpt your beard into the look you desire. A spritz of hairspray can add some extra protection from the elements.

For a sleek lookAfter application, comb with a beard-safe comb in fluid downward strokes. Once you have the general shape laid, apply a dime size amount of hair gel to your hands and work through the bead. Run your comb back over the hair being careful not to part too deeply into the facial hair. Blowdry on the cool setting to lock in your look.

For a natural lookApply ONLY beard oil and balm according to their directions. Once applied, use a boar hair bristle brush to brush the hair upward and then back downward. Use the palms of your hands to shape.

Itchy and unruly beard hair can kill anyone’s vibes, but you don’t have to go clean-shaven to achieve a sharp appearance, just a few drops of the right beard oil or beard wax your facial hair can go from dull to dapper in an instant! Here’s our picks for the best beard oils in Australia.
